Chapter 16

The warm yellow glow of the lanterns in the studio illuminated Michelle’s worktable and the milk can she painted. After supper she’d finished her chores and then grabbed a sweater and retreated to the barn to lose herself in her favorite hobby and pray.

Lord, help me work through my bewildering feelings for Korey and Tyler. Please lead my heart on the path you’ve chosen for me. Erase my emotions for Tyler that have hijacked my thoughts. Help me love Korey the way I should. I don’t want to hurt him. He’s too important to me and the future I crave.

Michelle dipped her brush in blue paint and began working on the sky above the patchwork of rolling fields. Then she added puffy white clouds. When she heard the door behind her squeak open, she frowned.

“I know it’s getting late, Jorie . . . Tell Mamm I’ll be in soon. I just need to finish this up, okay?”

“I’m not Jorie.”

Michelle stilled, and heat ricocheted up her neck as her nerve endings started to thrum. She peered over her shoulder, and her breath caught in her lungs as she drank in the sight of Tyler highlighted by the glow of the lanterns. He was handsome in a gray shirt. His strong jaw looked freshly shaved, and his hazel eyes sparkled.

“Hi,” she managed to say, her voice soft and quavering.

Tyler fiddled with his straw hat in his hands. Then he pointed to the door. “I can go.”

“No!” Her quick response only caused her cheeks to burn hotter. She took a deep breath. “You can stay.”

He nodded and took another step into the small room.

“What are you doing here?”

“I went to see Charity, and she wasn’t home.” He crossed to the table and stood beside her. “So, I saw the lanterns in your haus, and I thought I’d come by to say hi. When I went to the door, Jorie told me that you were out here.”

“Charity and her family are visiting her cousins who came to town for a wedding. Didn’t she tell you?” Michelle asked.

He rubbed his chin. “I don’t recall her mentioning it.”

“She might not have since it was last minute. She told me that she wasn’t sure that the cousins were going to make it.”

“Oh.” He smiled. “I guess I should have called her before heading over to her haus, but her visit with her cousins sounds like it was just as unplanned as my visit.”

“Sometimes the unexpected visits are the best ones.” She felt her body relax as they studied each other. She breathed in his scent—soap and sandalwood—and her hands trembled.

Then a vision of Korey’s handsome face flashed in her mind, and guilt grabbed her by her throat.

“Where’s Korey?” she asked.

Tyler hopped on a stool. “He’s helping Dwight work on his haus.”

“Their wedding is coming in just a month and a half.” She once again wondered if Tyler would marry Charity someday, and she felt her lips flatten.

Tyler pointed to the milk can she’d been painting. “That’s beautiful.
